Question by JJB: Would this be a good time to start franchising my business?
I clean carpets. I do a really good job and made some really good choices in equipment. I got in at a relatively low cost compared to some others. Despite the weak economy, I’m doing well. I am doing over ,000 a week in sales. I have two techs on the road, I do sales and estimates, sometimes I clean carpets too.
I started this alone in 1997. Honestly, the first year was tough, but I hired my first helper in 1998. 2001 was about as bad as my first year and I worked alone from spring of 2001 until summer of 2002, Since the summer of 2002, things have gotten better and better every month.
I’d like to think I am an expert in this business. I have successful experience as well as over 500 hours of formal training from trade associations and manufacturers.
I do both residential and commercial work. I see some companies sell you about ,000 worth of equipment and train you for about 30 hours. They charge you 5x the cost because I suppose they consider their training so valuable. I once hired an employee of a franchise. He was not very good. He had more training in high pressure sales tactics than anything else. I think I’m better than that. I operate my business based on quality work at a fair price, not grab the cash and dash. This business isn’t going to make you rich, but it pays OK, if you want to work hard. I fear most people looking into franchises are looking to get rich quick. I can’t help you with that.
Any ideas are appreciated.

From what you’ve said, you sound like you have your stuff together. I mean, you’ve been in business for about 12 years, so the experience is there.

I believe you could do well on improving your business, no matter how the market is right now. I think it mainly depends on how you market yourself and your business!

Question by : What are good, fair prices for my Mobile Auto Wash & Detailing Business?
I’m now in the advertising part of my business I just started and I’m needing help coming up with prices and figured just to ask the public on here! My business is a mobile auto wash and detailing buisness where I have my work van equipped with all the necessary equipment (pressure washer, water tank, generator, shop vac, cleaning supplies, etc.) and I go anywhere to where a person would want to get their car washed or detailing on the spot at their work or home or wherever! Now my main two services include the basic wash which is just a wash of the exterior and shine added to the tires and cleaning out of the inside with a vaccum and armor applied and windows cleaned and optional scent added. Now what would be a good, reasonable price for this service for regular sized vehicles and then a price for large vehicles? And the other service will be the full detail which is everything, the basic wash plus wax job, cleaning of the carpets, engine bay cleaning, rims polished and just anything you can think of to be done. What would be a good reasonable price for this for regular sized vehicles and then a price for larger vehicles? Please help me with this! Also keep in mind I’m mobile and come to the customer, which means I have to cover my gas for van, pressure washer, generator plus the many gallons of water to fill my water tanks in my van!

Call around and ask others what they charge. Don’t have to tell them that you’re starting your own business. What about your local Chamber of Commerce? The Better Business Bureau?

Question by Sorry, I must have been hacked: What is a good way to remove carpet stains without a professional?
I have stains on my carpet from my cats, who are now trained. Where I live we cannot hire people like Stanley Steamers so we are stuck! The carpet is brown and has a short weave that doesn’t have to be vacuumed very much, what is my best bet for removing stains?
They are stains from them tipping over glasses onto the floor, juice, milk ect.

Best answer:

Answer by sweetpea
If they are cat pee stains, you want to neutralize the stains with something with enzymes. Try Nature’s Miracle or something similar…remember “enzymes”.

Question by tish: Good floor cleaner for white linoleum floor?
I’m renting an apartment that has low quality white flooring in the kitchen. It very easily gets dirty and shows every speck. Regular floor cleaners don’t make much impact, but comet works well. However if I used comet, no matter how many times I rinse it afterwards the floor still feels gritty. Any suggestions?

Question by : Good CHEAP products to clean car carpet?
My passenger side of my car floor carpet has a disgusting liquid SOAKED in it. I need to get it out, I think it might be something that I had that spilled. Please disregard any “steamer” cleaners I’ve been seeing. I want to find something that I can get at your typical auto shop or even Target or something?

Thanks!

Answer by EvilWoman0913
The regular carpet cleaner that comes in a spray can might work, but I had some nasty stuff spilled on the carpet in my car once and the carpet cleaner didn’t work, so I used a bucket of hot water with a little Dawn dishwashing liquid and scrubbed the carpet clean. I did this during the summer, so I was able to leave my windows open (to promote quick drying and prevent mildew). After it was dry I vacuumed the carpet and it was just like new and actually had a nice fresh smell to it.

Question by Frank IWishIWas Sinatra: Is it a good idea to move out at 16?
Ok. So here is my situation. I’m a 15 year old male, and I’ll be turning 16 in June. My parents moved here to Tomball (small rural area in Houston), Texas a year ago in June 2009. Now my dad, just because he wants to, wants to go back to Miami, Fl, back to the house we own over there. He wants to leave Texas early June this year, once I finish school. My mom, my sister nor I want to move back. It’s just him, but according to the “pastor” of our church over there, he says we should move back and it was a mistake coming here. We are rented here and the rent is 00 a month. Our house over there is rented for ,000 a month, yet the mortgage is only about ,300, which leaves plenty of money left over for paying property taxes. So anyway, he says that we don’t have enough money to continue living here, but it’s mostly because he has turned into a lazy bum watching TV and doing absolutely nothing except watch TV and eat all day. All of this with the excuse of “we can’t make money because we plan to do a bankruptcy and if we make money, they’ll deny it”. We own a cleaning company, which provides services such as Carpet cleaning, upholstery and tile and grout cleaning, and about another million things we do. Hell, we have enough work to be making 0,000 a year (not exaggerating) My mom is fed up with him because he doesn’t let her go out and work either. So I was planning to move out once we got to Florida and earned money over the summer before school started again and drive directly back to Texas. I have talked it over with my aunt who lives not even a quarter mile away from our house here in Texas, and she and my uncle decided that I can move in with them and my cousin, since they have 3 spare rooms. Anyway, I have about ,000 saved up from a pressure washing part time and count on another -3,000 from pressure washing during the summer. Here’s the thing, I don’t want to move from Texas to Florida. I have friends, my girlfriend (I’d be devastated, we’ve been going out for a year).and all of my professors absolutely love me (not kidding). I have a car secured which I bought on a bank repo auction for ,000 (2003 Audi). Yet I still have to pay off. I’ll get my driver’s license once I turn 16. I’ve talked it over with my mom and she’s not too happy about the idea but understands my motives and is willing to let me leave. I know my dad would have a FIT if I moved out at 16, but here what I say: tough. The only actual expenses outside the regulars you’d expect such as a cell phone bill, groceries and gas money (keeping in mind that I won’t be paying for housing), is my gym membership which runs me about /month (I have a personal trainer), and my basketball coach (about 0/month) Once I have about ,000 secured at least I plan to leave Florida and move back to Texas just in time for when the school year begins. One question I have is that my dad un-enrolled me from this school (he went stated that I won’t be going to it anymore, and they gave him all sorts of paperwork) and enrolled me in the school over in Florida so we don’t have to deal with any of that when we get there. If I were to continue going to this school I’d have to re-enroll, and show proof of residence and everything. Now, I don’t want to get an emancipation or anything, I’d just be living with relatives other than my parents and sister. It’s not like I’m being abused or endangered. My parents love me, and I understand that. I plan to visit them every once in a while, and I plan to move back once I graduate from high school (I’m a sophomore now), since I intend to go to the University of Miami, which my current girlfriend also plans to attend. I (think I) have the money to support myself for a good while, considering the fact that I have no housing costs. I also own my own pressure washing equipment, so I can work. I believe that I am mature and independent enough to go through with this decision. One of the questions I have is: Since I don’t have an emancipation or anything, and my legal parents are living in Florida, would I have any trouble enrolling back into my school with my Uncle or Aunt if they don’t have my custody, and I am only living with them, though no legal documents say so? Also, do you think it’s a good idea for me to move? If not, why?
Thanks for reading my rant, but I don’t want an emancipation. I just want to move. My dad took it pretty well actually. I’m actually just moving in with some relatives. I don’t want to become a legal adult at 16, I will still have caretakers. I just won’t live with my parents. It’s kind of like a friend of mine, who lives with her best friend, while her parents only live a few miles away…..
